Title: The Ampersands: We're White
Category: Performance
Year: 1995
Synopsis: Don't worry- I'm not a racist. This little ditty makes fun of white americans such as myself who are more or less ethnicity-free. We don't know really where our ancestry lies, we don't exactly have long-standing traditions stretching back centuries. We're just here figuring it out day to day. The piece also satirizes white tourists going overseas and coming back with nothing much but a suntan.
Production Notes: As in the previous video, many of the sources (such as the cringe-worthy line dancers) are appropriated from mass media. Also in the piece there are several photos I took at the Little Bighorn battefield, where Custer met his ignominious end. A week or so before I got there, someone had set fire to the area where Custer was killed. That's why in the photos, the gravestones are charred black. The music was sequenced using a keyboard/synth combo, with the exception of the guitar & sax which are performed live. The dual soloing of guitar & sax was improvised.
