Title: Selections from the Early Morning Journal
Category: Video
Year: 1994
Synopsis:
For about a year prior to making this video, I used a portable cassette recorder to record myself describing my dreams just after waking up every day. It was a lot more effective than trying to write them down, which doesn't work very well for various reasons. Anyway, at the time when I started making my dream journal tapes, I didn't think about incorporating them into an art piece, but later it just sort of worked out that way. My dream world, even to this day, is filled with the extreme things I never really experience in life; extreme violence and sexuality, etc. But also liberating things such as flying often and becoming other people.

Production Notes: When it came time to shoot the video, I decided that it would be pointless to attempt to try to re-enact or illustrate the dream imagery, so instead I used images of the first things I would see when waking up in the morning; things in my room, the view out my window, the coffeemaker and so forth. In the Audio/Music section of this site, there is a longer audio-only version of this piece. Funny story- I gave a tape of the piece to a guy I knew, who played it on his radio show. His show got cancelled because so many people called to say how offended they were by my piece.
