Title: Replacement Level Synopsis: This piece is 1 of 6 created for "Lost As Heat", an interactive DVD-Video disc. The title "Replacement Level" is taken from a term in the study of human population dynamics. The piece is a reflection on the state of human overpopulation in the world. The cycles of reproduction visible in the video go on and on until the sheer number of individuals are beyond comprehension. Production Notes: The cloud-like, swirling material in the video is not a computer-generated effect (as some have guessed). It's actually a hot tub shot from above with the thermal imaging camera. The fetus-like figure visible at the beginning is myself on the surface of the water in the hot tub. The sound track features the sounds of clothes dryers and steam radiators. When the cells divide visually on screen, you can hear the sound of inserting a quarter into a clothes dryer. |
