Title: Excerpts from "Stress Positions" live at Roulette
Category: Performance
Year: 2009
Synopsis
: This collaborative piece, with Julie Fotheringham, was performed at Roulette's Mixology series which is hosted by Location One gallery in New York. This piece, which is a series of short works strung together is intended to evoke, conflate and confuse motifs of torture for the purpose of extracting information (as in the CIA's euphemistically-named "enhanced interrogation techniques") and torture for the purpose of extracting pleasure/pain (a la BDSM). The idea of "stress positions" was also extrapolated into uncomfortable, sexually-charged situations such as the beginning of the performance, when the male character is using a remotely-controlled PTZ camera to fixate on the woman character. A review of the show on OFFOFFOFF.com: here. More info on Julie Fotheringham here.
Production Notes: The entire performance lasted about 90 minutes and included some other pieces that Julie and I had done previously (which are shown on this site) such as "Heel", "Cover/Uncover" & "$20 Up Front". Regarding the equipment used for the piece, the visual imagery comes entirely from live cameras; about 6 different ones of various types. For the music, several different stringed instruments were used, as well as MIDI drums, a radio, computer voice, live wireless microphones, etc.
